Family History
Three Generations of the Haas Family
There were three generations of German-Jewish immigrants and their descendants who lived in the Haas-Lilienthal House from 1886 until 1972. Through entrepreneurial endeavors, they helped transform San Francisco from a coarse boomtown into a world-class metropolis.
The House Help
The Haas-Lilienthal House was always full with family members and house help. Living with the family were a cook, upstairs maid, a second maid, a waitress, a nursemaid, and a Chinese laundryman. Early 1900 census records show that the house staff was comprised of immigrants from China, Japan, Ireland, Germany, and France.
